Melasma Treatment

Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by dark, discolored patches on the skin, typically on the face. It is caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Melasma is often triggered by factors such as sun exposure, hormonal changes (e.g. pregnancy), and genetics. While melasma is harmless, its appearance can affect one's confidence, prompting many to seek treatment.
Types of Melasma
1. Epidermal Melasma: Affects the top layer of the skin and is characterized by well-defined dark brown patches.
2. Dermal Melasma: Affects the deeper layers of the skin and appears as lighter brown or bluish-gray patches.
3. Mixed Melasma: A combination of both epidermal and dermal melasma, making it more challenging to treat.
Causes of Melasma
Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) rays trigger the production of melanin, which can lead to the development or worsening of melasma.
Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, especially during pregnancy (also called the "mask of pregnancy"), the use of birth control pills, or hormone therapy, can cause melasma.
Genetics: A family history of melasma increases the likelihood of developing the condition.
Skin Irritation: The use of certain skincare products, cosmetics, or procedures that irritate the skin can contribute to melasma.
